Cruisin' thru Tom Cruise, Part 3

Over-the-top would be an understatement in discussing the overall nature of this film, a star vehicle for Timothy Hutton in the immediate wake of his success with Robert Redford's Oscar-winning Ordinary People the year before. Cruise is the muscle here. Popping up mostly to brandish and/or fire a weapon, the hothead of the main threesome rounded out by a laidback Sean Penn. A bit ridiculous but servicable as a sort of hostage standoff flick and perfectly well-acted across the board. Character actor Tom could sure chew up some scenery. Lots of fun, even if the movie itself turns pretty bleak.

"Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse."

    Manchester by the Sea

The most beautifully acted movie of the year, so rich in character in every way. Likewise, the setting itself, one of the most picaresque places in America, works to create an ironic sense of truth for us to connect to, a truth about all of our lives' tragedies and how some wounds can never be mended.

Noomi Rapace kills. Scott's direction, specifically of the heart-pounding action sequences, is of his best. The visual effects and production design...bold and epic. Thrills and spills and mf'n chills. And the unanswered questions of co-writer Damon Lindelof's script should remain questions (no sci-fi movie knows why we're here and that's why we love them) and serve only to juice up the fear and dread of what's to come and what came before. It's a damn fine film.
