Lee’s review published on Letterboxd:
Don't watch Southpaw expecting a movie like Rocky. It is a much more realistic take on boxing.
You get to witness the physical problems that the main character experiences while boxing for a living. He spits blood in the mornings, he tenses in severe pain from the beatings he takes and his life is generally up and down with the downs being quite severe by some of the poor choices he makes in his life.
Billy Hope is also a character that I found myself initially disliking! Like the secondary characters, he has to earn our respect as the movie progresses by hitting rock bottom and then working his way back to success.
The dark side of boxing is presented in Southpaw in a way that no other movie has. It's not comfortable viewing at times.
But boxing itself is full of uncertainties.
