Spencer Kain’s review published on Letterboxd:
If you’ve seen any of these “dog-featured” movies you’ve basically already seen this one, too. It’s a shame because the book is one of my absolute favorites but the movie adaptation left me wanting to just go back and read the book. There are of course several miners that tug on your heartstrings but they’re all pretty manipulative and are never as emotional as it thinks it is and definitely never reaches the emotional heights of the book. The cast does a fine job including Kevin Costner voicing Enzo the dog, but they’re never really going above the standard. The direction by Simon Curtis just seems to be on autopilot most of the time, there’s nothing remarkable about it or anything. I wish this was s ether because again, I absolutely love the book but this was just so disappointingly average.
