Cruella

Cruella

It's funny that some people are saying that Cruella is like a female version of Joker considering that this feels a *lot* more like a Batman movie than that film ever did. Though that's largely because like some of the best Batman stories, this film manages to capture a delightfully strange combination of Gothic melodrama and over the top camp to create one *hell* of a fun ride. I did find that the script felt a bit weaker in the second act than in the other two, the soundtrack seemed a bit random and overbearing at times, and some of the attempts to tie the film into 101 Dalmatians a little odd, as this is clearly meant to be more of a Wicked/Maleficent style re-imaging of the character more so than a prequel to that story, but other than that I thought this movie was a total blast. Craig Gillespie's direction was incredibly fluid and energetic, the cinematography was really impressive, the Emmas, Stone and Thomson both give wildly entertaining performances, and if this movie doesn't get a best costume design nomination, someone will probably be wanting to keep a close eye on their dogs. This is probably the first of these live action adaptions of animated Disney classics to genuinely feel alive and like someone actually wanted to make this movie rather than just being a soulless cash grab. Is it perfect? Hell no, but it is a ton of fun, and sometimes that's all a movie needs to be.
