With Annihilation, Alex Garland establishes himself as one of the most ambitious science fiction visionaries of our time. This is a much bolder film than his 2014 Ex Machina, featuring stellar performances by Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Beautifully shot and deeply poetic, Annihilation takes us beyond the infinite, revealing the limitations of human understanding and the endless possibilities that open when one comes to this realization. One can spot the influence of Kubrick, Tarkovsky, and Scott, but this is truly an original vision from Garland.
