Ive been a fan of this film for over 20 years. Seeing it uncut in its original Japanese version is the best way to go - Varan is a mythical "God" on the Tibet region of Japan. Japanese scientists awaken the beast and there you go, Kaiju attack time. The music by Akira Ifukube is easily recognizable; it was altered to a rip-roaring tune in Ghidorah the three headed monster. The effects, creature and actors are all superb. Varan wasnt the most popular Kaiju nor all that powerful but it's great design with a good story. Varan flies in the Japanese version.
Possibly my favorite John Carpenter film. Moody, suspenseful, gory - just a terrific film. This has lots of action, one of the more incredible creatures with just outrageous effects and a lot of jolts to keep you on your toes. Kurt Russell is great in this. Actually so is in entire cast..and the music by Ennio Morricone is creepy good as well.
The effects by Rob Botin are just fantastic.
Carpenter at his directorial best. A Great creepy classic. Sort of a good vs. evil story with religious overtones. Researchers find a cylinder with green gook in it. It sprays out onto one member and she starts to infect the whole team turning them into zombies. Add some yucky bugs crawling all over the place , Alice Cooper and street people attacking the cast as well, another great performance by Donald Pleasence and youve got yourself a great horror flick ! :)
