Slow, both sweet and sour, touching and ah so delicious! What a movie! Enjoyed ti immensely. And the lovely, lovely love story just left me breathless! This is what real, emotional, deep movies look like. Wish more such movies can be found in the cinema. Exceptional acting performances. No music! Refreshing to say at least. And the enchanting set design. A true gourmand experience for all senses. Just watch it!
A lovely leading lady gives this one a slightly higher rating. Maika Monroe, I for one like you quite a bit! And the movie itself was pretty solid. With Anna Karenina (and the rest of Tolstoy's work), casting is everything. Huge battles, lavish costumes, incredible set design - you can all thrown them away if you don't have good actors - Tolstoy is nothing if not a chronicler of people, their desires, their questions and seekings. If you get the casting wrong, you'll miss the whole point. Sadly, this is what happened with this mini-series.

Oh, this is a movie that hides much beneath a seemingly pedestrian, run of the mill story. Malle surprises at every turn, behaving almost like a magician - turning an ordinary story into a myth, selfish bourgeoise characters into partial archetypes, the lovely countryside into a mystical landscape, and Brahms' often difficult music into pure perfection of sensuality.
Truly, when you look at it from a boarder, more diverse perspective, this movie is a small marvel. It's so much more…
