Berth Marks

Berth Marks ★★★½

Only the second Laurel and Hardy sound film, they play a pair of vaudeville performers making an arduous journey by train to their next gig. There’s a sequence where they try to arrange themselves in a packed bunk bed that is interminably long, but also so representative of their slow burn approach that I have to admire its audacity. I bet if I watched this in a packed theater, rather than by myself on a Friday night during the halftime of an NBA playoff game, it would’ve been a real winner.
