The First Purge ★★

Really a bog-standard urban war thriller propped up by its incredibly dysfunctional world-building, politics that bear little resemblance to our own. Of course, the whole series has been nothing but these, except this instalment does one extraordinary thing: acknowledge that its central gimmick cannot actually work in real life, before proceeding to not answer the question why they desperately need it to work to the point of employing incredibly expensive rigging methods to make it so.

Because really, the world-building is all there is to this fairly functional film, with very little interesting visual conceits to grab a hold on, beyond the creepy contact lens things that are peppered through the whole thing.
