The French Dispatch

The French Dispatch ★★½

I started watching this with the subtitles on but after 30 minutes realized this was a mistake, as it reinforced my feeling about many Wes Anderson films that — textually speaking — they unfold like someone reading a catalog to you. (He’s the J Peterman of filmmakers.) When I just looked at it, I liked it more though still felt almost nothing. By the final third I was just bored. I looked at my phone and noticed that this is the first film to star Frances McDormand and Steve Park since Fargo. So there’s that.
