Steve Pennock’s review published on Letterboxd:
John Hughes's masterpiece. In my opinion this is Hughes at his funniest, smartest and most accomplished as a film maker. He steps away from coming of age comedy, he steps away from his work with children and/or young adults and he handles two of the biggest names in comedy at this time.
We are taken on the journey with Steve Martin and John Candy as they get stuck together trying to get home for thanksgiving. Martin starts playing the straight man, unflappable and polite, if not a little uptight; and his transition into a raving mad man is brilliantly handled and funny as hell. Candy is the polar opposite to Martins character, unwaveringly positive and optimistic they play off each other brilliantly and it feels like Hughes just happens to be there to capture it.
A comedy with real heart and a great relationship between its characters, its a holiday film worth watching.
