Stew Mitchell’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ve been a little bit disappointed in Marvel’s characterization of Spider-Man recently, and even though I enjoyed Homecoming, I was worried that they were writing him (and other key characters) fundamentally wrong. I still have that issue here, but by the end of the movie it actually seems like he might have finally evolved into the hero we know and love instead of the caricature he’s been lately.
However, the one thing this movie does exceptionally well is Mysterio. Gyllenhall is perfect for the role (just like he is in every other role he’s ever played), and his portrayal here is an absolute wet dream for the comic book nerd in me. Come to think of it, both Homecoming and this one have done a fantastic job with the villains. I hope they can keep that trend up, especially since it’s so atypical of new Marvel.
