The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★½

If I was rating this on the acting by the 3 co-leads (no matter what categories they'll compete in), I would give it 5 stars as they are each so remarkable and in such different ways, but ultimately, it is Olivia Colman who, once again, held me most captive. I am convinced she is the best actress of her generation (see Broadchurch, The Night Manager, and this, to name but a few of her achievements).

But then there was all the fisheye lens and double exposure shots which felt more like "ooooh, look at me, being inventive" than actually necessary or advancing the plot. Plus, the last 15 minutes felt differently paced than the rest of the film and overly-extended so I was left feeling hit over the head with a mallot instead of allowed my own contemplation of meaning. Maybe Yorgos L will always leave me feeling this way?
