Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell

Generally watchable, increasingly risible, ultimately indefensible. I remember darn little about the first two GitS movies except for what they pilfered from Blade Runner—and what The Matrix pilfered from them—but I’m pretty sure neither was this boring.

The (carefully internally “justified”) whitewashing is the least of this film’s problems, given its ultimate endorsement of transhuman death squads meting out extrajudicial “justice” to the enemies of the corporate-political State. It’s Robocop without the sense of humor or satirical intent, made with the clear (and likely correct) assumption we won’t question the servo-driven boot crushing our faces forever as long as it nominally belongs to ScarJo.
