Watched this to confirm my preconception that Gunn has been a one-note edgelord sadist the whole time, and yep. It's actually striking how consistent this is tonally with his later work in the genre: Crimson Bolt and Boltie could have fit into the opening of The Suicide Squad without changing a thing.

(I know I'm in the minority on the Guardians flicks, but to grossly conflate artist and art, Gunn is Bacon's Jacques, a glib huckster with contempt for his audience, happy when people take his bullshit at face value but not really giving a fuck either way.)
