Batman ★★★★

30th Anniversary Reissue

How time flies. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since I last saw this movie at the cinema. The opening credit sequence against the backdrop of the Batman logo, accompanied by Danny Elfman’s instantly recognisable score, gives me goosebumps whilst also catapulting me back to 1989 and a room full of people witnessing what would become the second most important superhero film of all time. I think it’s fair to say that without Batman (1989) the birth of the revitalised superhero movie, which took place at the turn of this century, just wouldn’t have happened in the manor it did. As for Jack Nicholson, well his performance as the Joker continues to get better during each viewing and is right up there with the greatest superhero villains ever. The 4K restoration was also mightily impressive wetting my appetite for the release of the 4K edition next month.
