"Sometimes I go by the glass."
About 20min in, a sick feeling started rising in my stomach and it didn't stop until it started coming out of my eyes.
...a Baby Driver reference? wut
Anyways, this was alright. Rian Johnson is obviously a smart and clever guy and this movie seems like it was really hard to write, but this also felt like it was about 5 hours long and I wonder what a more visually stylish director would have done with his script. Speaking of scripts, I would love to see a buddy cop sequel where Lakeith and M. Emmet Walsh team up to solve a series of mysteries. Basically, this movie needed more Lakeith.
Utterly fucking depraved. Lurid. Glacial. Experimental. Fetishistic. Singular. Exploitative. Mind melting. I can't explain it, but somehow, Refn took everything I hated about The Neon Demon, doubled down on it all, and I love it. Like Twin Peaks: The Return, there is a viewing learning curve. There are zero concessions to conventional TV/streaming series pacing, mechanics, or payoffs. The series forces you to get on it's wavelength or fuck off. Cliff Martinez's score is from another dimension.
And oh yeah, there's ska.
