The House Across the Lake ★★

I really didn't think this one would be so dull. It has a sort of Great Gatsby setup moving into Double Indemnity territory and it all sounded nice and Hitchcockian but the main plot point, a little like that coal mine movie I watched the other day, comes way too late and there's no time for anything to develop from it. It was interesting to see Sid James pre-Carry On, though, I guess - I don't know if it was just the very similar billiards scene but he totally reminded me of Sydney Pollock in Eyes Wide Shut here.
