Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★★½

Before I give my thoughts about this film, I met Siegel for the first time irl. We had a great time. Thank you for coming out.

Honestly, I don't know how to talk about this film without mentioning Chadwick Boseman. Man.. What a performance. When people were saying that he overshadows Viola Davis's performance, I laughed. But once it got to his monologue, I nearly cried. We lost a great one folks and its safe to say that Chadwick is defiantly going to get the Best Actor award at the Oscars.

Chadwick Boseman has TWO perfect monologues and both of them relate to the struggles of being a black artist and just surviving in world where black people are taken advantage with their talents. We see this everyday with modern black artists like Kanye and Kendrick Lamar. Constantly stuck in contracts they can't get out. Royalty and masters that can't be bought back. In general, the richer people take advantage of minority art and once the art diminishes, those people throw it away/move on.

Viola Davis brings a show stopping energy that can't be matched with anyone else this awards season. I probably have to see Vanessa Kirby and Andra Day's performances before I make a final decision. But at the moment, I think she can definitely get an Oscar for this role. The sheer energy of Viola Davis's performance makes me extremely happy.

Also, the entire ensemble cast is really solid too. Colman Domingo in particular was really great in this.

Overall if you're familiar with August Wilson's plays like Fences, you'll love this. I highly recommend it. I might give it a 5/5 if the rewatch, works for me.

Rip Chadwick Boseman and it's his birthday today. Makes it even sadder.
