Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

A tragic & stagey parable about the true perils of materialism, with three universal truths:

1. Never skimp on a promised Coca-Cola.

2. Never step on another man’s mustard-hued shoes.

3. Never wrong or cross or doubt Viola Davis. Inarguably, her redoubtable & domineering presence in this role should earn her not only an Oscar nom, but the sole rights to appropriating Chuck Norris jokes from here on out:

Viola Davis doesn’t read books. She stares them down until she gets the information she wants.

Time waits for no woman. Unless that woman is Viola Davis.

When God said, “Let there be light!”, Viola said, “Say Please.”
