Suspiria

Suspiria ★★★★½

Ok. Wow.
This was way more complex and amazing that i expected. Probably need to rewatch it, given the ridiculous amount of different interpretation and the difficulty of analyzing certain ambigous plot points...
Don't even know where to start. Well, let's try in diegetical/narrative order.
Since the people already knew the original's story, there was no meaning in hiding the reveal of the dance school being a witches covenant, so we're cleverly told it from the beginning. The psychoanalist specialization and the Jung's book on the desk already tell us from the beginning to look out for symbolism and archetypes, wich, needless to say, are obsessively presented to the viewer from the first minute (maybe a bit too much?). The first act is obviously a big foreshadowing, as is the norm, with elements like Patricia's song only gaining meaning in the end. ..
You can see the high level of the writing from little details like the jungian psychologist disdaining Lacan (the most otrageous freudian fanboy), even if i was kinda let down by them having to explain the audience what the Badher-Meinhof gang was, as with every mainstream movie when even slightly touching on matters that aren't universally known...
I loved how Guadagnino took a quite simple idea and immersed it in a way more complex universe and in a way more detailed and historically definite context.
Loved the parallelisms between the Markos group and the Baader-Meinhof gang (not forgetting the more tangential comparison with the nazi structure): both are called "revolutionary organizations", both have lost their leaders (due to illness and incarceration, respectively), and both are trying to save them (by the mean a hostage crysis and a magical/satanic ritual). The internal power struggle in the Markos covemant are also reminding of those that often take place in a cult/ terrorist group/ political party when more of one prominent figure gains momentum...
The ritualization of bodies and his movements and the cinematographic contrast between aggratiate/artistic dance movement and abnormal/deathly one is quite the feat and leads to two of the best scenes in the entire movie.
The plot gets more confusing when we approach the climax tough. How does the doctor know where to go to find his wife? Why they have a grudge with him in the Markos group? Did she hid his wife's documents on purpose? And for what reason? Also we're supposed to think that his wife and his 2 companions became the three Mothers, even if we've been told their existence predates christian age? Were they just new vessels?
Well, then, the ritual scene was just a masterpiece.
I don't remember watching a scene in wich cinematography and soundtrack merged so well in a long, long time...
Even here there' something i didn't quite understand, tough. If the fat lady who kills Blanc is Markos, and the black one who lives under the floor Mather Suspiriorium, why they refer earlier to "MotheR Markos" as the one living under the floor and "feeling" the dancers if we're shown the "black one" is the one actually doing it?
Well, there are really too many details to analyze, the more blatant being the psychoanalytic quotes, from the more evident mother's relationship to the themes of Guilt and Shame, principal enemies of human sanity/balance for Freud, while Susy/Mother Suspiriorum tells the doctor "are essential to them"... the sense of Self (the "i am myself!" That Susie shouts after a nightmare, her merging with the Mother etc. etc.).
The only things i didn't like were:
1- Germanns not owning umbrellas for some reason
2- the chapter division. Movies really need to stop doing that, they're not books, there's no meaning to them in such a quickly consumed media...
3- the theatre i went showed the original version with italian subs, wich were hella distracting (almost as much as Dakota Johnson's body). Really dunno why someone would want to watch a movie in it's origibal form if he doesn't know the language...
I'm reall, really sorry i do such long posts when a movie impresses me, i guess it's a way to "save" all my toughts and impressions of it...
P.s. should rewatch the original to be sure if some svenes were reenactement of the ones from the original or ut was just my
