Nomadland is ravishingly pragmatic movie. In preparation for this film’s more than likely sweep at the upcoming Oscars I was able to see it in theaters. Seeing this film in theaters (with my mom) was such an immersive and inarticulate experience that I’ll never forget. This film is simply a beautiful film that consists so many complex emotional layers. In one scene in the first act Fern finds a dog roaming around her van, so she takes it to the main office of the RV park to return the animal to its owner, she learns it’s owner left the dog behind and Fern is given the option to keep the dog. She swiftly turns down the opportunity but moments later she considers taking in the kind animal but then once again leaves it be. Fern is a woman who lost basically all of the most important aspects in her life; her husband, her beloved town, and her happiness when alone.
Naturally she fears letting something personal into her life, the dog, because as shown in her past she thinks she’ll lose it. This dilemma is further expanded on with her relationship with Dave later in the film. There’s something that draws the audience into being engaged with Fern. Personally for me I’m drawn into her character because her personality is so deep and she reminds me of someone I know. Francis McDormand is a force of nature in this film, each time I think about her performance I like it even more. Also I couldn’t finish this review without mentioning Cholé Zhao’s impeccable direction. The best part of her direction was definitely how well she directed all of these regular people. She’s seriously going to be a major player in the future and her inevitable Oscar win probably won’t be her last. Overall Nomadland is a realistic look at the adventure of a woman that can’t seem to escape grief and how the content lifestyle of the modern Nomad helped ease the pain, it’s an incredibly well made film that’ll continue to connect with people as long as it can be seen.
