For the month of May, at least for all of my "May the World Be with You" films (I’m doing my 30 for 30 in May), I will be cribbing my friend ghostdinosaur's list making style of review to make the challenge easier and less time consuming.

    Things I like about Alucarda:
    1. The sets.
    2. “It’s like an image in a mirror. It’s like you and me.”
    3. “Are you afraid of dying?”
    “Yes. Everyone is.”
    “I mean dying,…

Things I like about Man - Woman Wanted:
    1. The color grading. Very bright!

    3. Shot from below the desk, but the chair is eye level.

Carl Theodor Dreyer goes out with a film so literary and dense in detail, but in visuals it all flows so simply. Wrapping your mind around every little moment as they're spoken of in ways clearly implying there is more to each character and each situation than is being made explicit, with a theater-level of intimacy with the film's subjects contrasting the sharp distance of their interactions with each other. None…

Okay. The day I watched this film I couldn't even describe what it all meant. But a few days later, I could reflect a little more on the interesting journey Bergman takes us to. Those dreams and childhood memories were so real and magical at the same time, and the voiceover sounded like a grandfather telling his grandchildren a story about a day in his long life. However, it's not about any day; it's the day he realized he had…

This film was sooooo melodramatic, oh my GOD. I got very annoyed with the soundtrack and the way Ali stared at her every five minutes with a pain expression on his face. I wanted to punch him sometimes, especially at the end, when he was feeling guilty.

Warm and stellar storytelling. An Angel at My Table doesn't always grasp the mindset of Janet Frame, but nevertheless Frame's environment is portrayed with such life and detail that the character still feels fulfilling. Every actor is near perfect for their roles, with the three women playing Janet being the greatest highlights (mostly Kerry Fox, who plays Frame in adulthood where much of the film takes place).
