Part of my 5 Directors x 5 Unseen Films (23) challenge.
Any film with Peter Falk and Burt Young is going to be funny. And any film with half-naked women mud-wrestling is going to fun to watch. But in the last film of his long career, director Robert Aldrich seemed less intent on story-telling and character development than filming tag-team wrestling scenes and highlighting the graft taking place in pro sports. I wish he had raised the comedy and drama to the levels we know he was capable of, and I know a sequel was planned. However, I suspect Aldrich may have already been in pain, suffering from the kidney ailment that would eventually end his life. R.I.P. to an American original. Your legacy is more than this soft-core sports outing.
