Drive ★★½

Sorry, but I really don't get why so many people love this movie. Almost all the communication is conveyed through subtext and "meaningful" looks. Some of the cast and crew have stated that what's important "isn't what's said, but what isn't said." It was like watching a silent movie, and not in a good way.

Yes, the opening chase scene is probably among the best I have ever seen after Bullitt. If the movie stopped right there, as the crowd exits the arena, I would have rated this a 5-star short. But by the time the Driver (Ryan Gosling) has his confrontation in the elevator, the film had lost any empathy I had. With the possible exception of the boy Benicio (Kaden Leos), there are no admirable characters. Gosling plays the Driver with so little overt emotion, he might as well have been wearing the rubber mask throughout. Cannes may have loved this, but I can see why the Oscars passed it over. It was a huge disappointment in my book.
