We wished we'd taken opiates before watching this film.
"This is a very well made, highly produced, awful move." - my boyfriend
"Maybe if it was only a quarter of the length and all cannibalism." - my flatmate
"How was Keanu Reeves the least vague character in this film?" - my other flatmate
Surrealism without metaphors, allegory, meaningful critique. Just beautiful shallow imagery, absolutely no substance. And THE worst dialogue I have ever heard, and I've seen The Room.
The two stars are for the perfectly framed and lit shots, and the great synth soundtrack.
A total fluff piece only worth the watch for costuming, set design and soundtrack. Even with so little dialogue in many of the scenes, Kirsten Dunst does well at subtlety portraying the fears and emotions of the young dauphine as she goes from the Austrian court and establishes herself in the French court. The second half of the film however lacks any deep feeling.
Most disappointing coy inferred sex and (possible) masturbation scenes ever.
