    not sure if connor has released anything prior to this but possessing this level of aesthetic discernment right out the gate is beyond impressive. even the most obvious of influences (brakhage, barley etc) have been effectively distilled into a register that is his own. images so powerful i felt like i was absorbing the history of these locations. akin to the feeling of visiting a place that is unknowable in the moment but the beauty is recalled in those short bursts of consciousness that reside in your memory and nervous system

    some of swanberg’s finest work. very fitting in the context of his filmography as someone who made a name for himself covering the universal problems of late 20/early 30yo’s now coming to terms with middle age. these characters maintain a youthful spirit but their spark is interrupted by the conflicting lifestyle tics ppl naturally develop at their age. much of which is left either unsaid or avoided to skirt the process of relearning the formalities of building a relationship, romantic…

    a camp recreation of psycho. everything down to the hokey acting, candy coloured sets & costumes, extreme dialing of the original’s iconography (spliced in footage of thunder during the shower scene, mrs. Bates’ body being surrounded by live birds in the cellar scene) it’s aware that all immersion with this film is nullified due to your history with hitchcock’s version, so it instead embraces that inherent detachment with an uncanny valley experience. it only highlighted the intensity of my relationship with the images in the original and demonstrated the surreal value in experiencing them differently. kind of an ode to the footprint cinema leaves on your psyche.
