At its core I don’t think this is so much about honesty or nobility like the original story seems have been, but more about an inability to cope with life after processing all it has to offer and realizing it’s not enough. Best case scenario, Gawain’s life sucks after all this. Maybe that’s what all the other knights realized and that’s why they go on quests all the time and ride giants and take shrooms with foxes. Maybe it’s a little too A Ghost Story overalls guy nihilist doomer of a conclusion, but leaving a bit of ambiguity as it does prevents the net result from being “life sucks and we should just die” and incites some action on the viewer’s part. Even if that action is to let Ralph Ineson chop your head off with an ax.
