A work in progress that will get there a little at a time, not all at once.
The best of the prequels, yes (although that is not difficult to achieve). The action, especially the opening, is well constructed and fast-paced. Just a shame lack the story is lacklustre and lacks pace and the dialogue is very expositional. It should have had the dark themes and tone of The Empire Strikes Back and we should have been able to learn more about the Dark side of the Force. And Hayden Christensen is not up to carrying the dramatic weight/tension of this film. The notion of 'show, don't tell' does not apply here where it really should.
Supposedly this film nearly destroyed both Jim Carrey's acting career and Ben Stiller's directing career. Carrey would respond with the successes of Liar Liar and The Truman Show and Stiller likewise with Zoolander and Tropic Thunder.
It does have quite a dark tone and a mean spirit, which might be one reason why a number of people dislike this film. There are some moments where the tone does not gel with the comedy. Some laughs are to be had, mostly…
Wash, rinse, repeat...and I mean that in a good way.
Spectacle and character both on display again. The animation has got better and better with each film. The story, though not as strong as the first film, is good and there is real heart and emotion throughout. A solid finale to a very accomplished franchise.
