Both for my study and for personal reasons, I am very interested in the concept of religion as portrayed in the movies. When you're known with, for instance, some of the recurring metaphors and canonical figures, it's not that hard to detect religion almost everywhere.

There are, ofcourse, these big Biblical blockbusters (The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur), but sometimes the subtext is much more subtle. By offering this comprehensive list, I want to show that religious ideas and concepts formed and/or influenced quite a number of movies you saw, still want to see, (or don't want to see at all).

Note #1: this is no toplist, as some movies included here made me wanna hit something.

Note #2: I obviously haven't seen all these movies.

Note #3: I tried to include all sides of the spectre: christianity, judaism, islam, hinduism, buddhism, atheism, philosophical visions on religion, new age and spirituality, some 'pagan', occult or esoteric perspectives (see mainly letterboxd.com/tbouwh/list/symbolic-esoteric-occult-film/) and of course everything in between.
