The Empty Theater on Substack
The Sacred and the Propane
I don’t want to be a hater. I want to relish the magic of the theater experience like everybody else. For someone who enjoyed Part 1, Part 2 should be a slam dunk success. The adventurous world-building and ambience of Part 1 was missing here, and I never clicked with the maximalist action spectacle in Part 2.
Greatly preferring Part 1 over Part 2 exudes of a desperate hot take, but I’m speaking from the heart.
This would be botched in so many ways in 2022. The characters would be winking to the audience, we’d be forced to sit through tedious world-building of the alien race, and overall would lack any sense of earnestness.
40 years later, it seems like kids respond to this film, and I find that genuinely heartwarming.
