    The Wailing

Technically and stylistically great, beautiful shots of rural korean life. Incredibly fun shaman ritual scene in the middle. The incompetent rural policeman were endearing but only to the point where it started to affect the plot. Did they not have reason enough to bring in the Japanese man for questioning!? Enjoyable but in terms of story not the 'brilliant mystery-thriller' I had hoped it might be.

    Spirited Away

Boundless imagination surrounds this story about Chihiro, a little girl whose parents are magically and my seriously locked away. Chihiro must learn to fend for herself for the first time. Surrounded by older figures who are either consumed in their work, or driven by consumption and greed she is able to stick to her morals and blissfully navigate this strange new world to be reunited with her loved ones.

Thoroughly enjoyable, had doubts with some clumsy editing in the first half hour but it grows into itself. Strong story about threat of tourism on local culture. Although a bit biased towards the locals, would have liked to see it question both sides more. Also climax felt out of place, bit of an easy way to end. Lovely dramatic scenes throughout though especially the winner stays on argument in the pub.

An insight into the influences, and cinematic language of David Lynch. An interesting watch for American film history buffs and Lynch-heads alike.
