First time watching Blow. I'd always considered this Generation Y's Scarface. I know a lot of people just a few years younger than me that Blow was a big movie for them growing up. Blow indeed shares a lot with Scarface, the inevitable highs and lows of a drug kingpin and there are some good scenes in Blow but never gets as big or as fun as Scarface. It was nice to see Johnny Depp trying and in a good movie. That combination is so rare that I was strangely taken a back by it. Also it takes way too long for Penelope Cruz to show up.
Blow works and I'm glad I can finally take it off my watchlist but the direction is inconsistent and did they really expect me to care about this drug slinging dirt bag?
