Confession time: I’ve never seen any version of nor read Macbeth. But luckily now I don’t have to! This movie rocked. There were definitely some “this probably plays better to someone who is familiar with Noh theatre” moments, but it was very accessible nonetheless. Highly recommended.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I’ve never seen a Kurosawa movie that’s a complete failure, but this is as close as he’s come. Even he claimed it was unfocused, which is pretty spot on. Shimura and Mifune are great, as always, but the plot is all over the place and the “magical sick daughter” trope was played out even back then. The climactic court scene was wildly implausible, even for a climactic court scene. Worth watching once but I don’t think I’ll ever do so again.
As someone who has strong (negative) reactions to peeping toms/voyeurs, this entire film makes me uncomfortable. Even the sex scene was deliberately framed like that. Uncomfortable in a good way (i.e., it was on purpose) but still, that’s an odd way to watch an entire 2 hour movie.
