I’m sure the sub-genre will grow tired eventually but honestly I’m still all for time loop movies. Palm Springs certainly isn’t Groundhog Day or even The Edge of Tomorrow, but it’s a really enjoyable entry on its own merits. The idea of two (three, actually) different people stuck in the same loop was new and interesting, and both leads are charming and have pretty good chemistry. Milioti especially is genuinely great here and could (and has before in her career) carry much worse material than this.

The evil Big Pharma stuff is pretty eye-roll-y even with the attempts at some nuance (they’re evil AND well-intentioned, sort of) and the action scenes are a little ho-hum*, but there’s some genuinely interesting stuff here grappling with the meaning of immortality, plus plenty of little Easter eggs for history buffs. Charlize is, as always, very good in this kind of role, and it was nice to see Ejiofor basically reprise his role from Serenity.

    6.5 B-

*Charlize’s presence is a constant reminder that we’re not watching the action from Atomic Blonde or one of its ilk

After fifteen years and at least a dozen viewings, it still gives me chills.

My enduring love for The Emperor's New Groove notwithstanding, this is probably the best animated film ever made, with a beyond impressive blend of thematic depth, narrative and moral complexity, memorable characters, and absurdly beautiful animation and music.

I went with the English dub this time around, and it's a tough choice on whether I prefer it or the Japanese version. On the one hand, I have to admit some of the voice acting in the English dub isn't perfect,…
