Ronnie's ★★★½

Another doc about long-hidden mental illness (Ronnie Scott's manic depression). The man behind London's most famous jazz club probably made the whole damn thing come to life because it kept him from that dark cloud, always trying to outrun in, but success only making him face it over and over. Okay, that's not the main thrust of the film--mostly this is a chance to see some amazing performances from a who's-who of jazz (not counting the Van Morrison, which is bloody awful. Send *in* the Clowns, Van? More like Send Them Out, mate!) There's also some stunning color footage of Soho. A bit too long, methinks, but a welcome tribute to an important locale.
