The Two Popes

The Two Popes ★★★★½

This film is surprisingly hilarious. The theater i saw it in had about 1,500 people and we were all doubled over at times. Hopkins and Pryce, unsurprisingly, deliver a master class in acting. The subtlety, timing, and emotion they bring to their respective rolls is astounding. The story itself is gripping and one that is very timely in our divided world. My one issue was the cinematography. It was meant to look like a documentary at times, but the camera shakes and quick zooms and focus shifts felt distracting. They weren’t necessary to heighten the tension when you already have Hopkins and Pryce.
