Almost unbearably intense at times.
I haven't read the book this is based on (Shriver's novels are hit-or-miss) for me, but I appreciated the movie's sometimes subtle ambiguity. Director Lynne Ramsay puts us inside Eva's head, so we could see her terror at watching Kevin grow up in the way he does and feel sympathy for her. But there are visual hints at the ways she is perhaps failing Kevin as a parent and the ways her husband is enabling Kevin's behavior. On the whole,…
