simultaneously one of the great action parodies because beyond the expertly crafted looney tunes visual gags, on a filmmaking level it's frequently indistinguishable from the real thing (god mctiernan) and one of the best movies about a movie star literally wrestling with their own hollywood fantasy image and myth. "you've brought me nothing but pain."

15-YEAR OLD ME: "Oh boy! A RESIDENT EVIL film and a remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD! I hope this means there will be a new wave of zombie films!"

*A FINGER ON THE MONKEY'S PAW CURLS*

Zack Snyder can craft a fun action scene, but I am baffled as to why he wanted to make ARMY OF THE DEAD.

It's a zombie heist film (There's potential there!), with a charming gang of actors (I do love Dave Bautista!), buckets…

So weird, so Danish, and yet, not even Anders Thomas Jensen’s weirdest Danish film.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Saw this twice at Sundance and it’s worth another look.

I can see people finding the film intriguing but not loving it and I relate with that. At the same time the more you consider what the film is saying the more you’ll get out of it. It’s definitely one to dissect and talk about with others.

From a filmmaking standpoint this is a very impressive debut from Rebecca Hall since it shows a lot of attention to framing, composition,…

Grew on me more as it went along, even if I agree it is overly pensive. An interesting story of self-preservation.

    Sundance Film Festival 2021

Rebecca Hall’s first rodeo as a director is a bit simplistic in its attempt to observe race and class in 1920s America. However, the cast is glamorous all around, most especially Ruth Negga, who knocks it out of the park. I’m not against the technical presentation either: the B&W cinematography is quite fitting. Honestly a film worth checking out for the performances alone.

    Matt Neglia

★★★★ Watched by Matt Neglia 30 Jan 2021

PASSING takes its black & white themes & uses them to tell its story in exquisite black & white photography. Rebecca Hall shows artistic promise as a director but her debut is lacking a certain energy & dramatic pull to really draw us in. Tessa Thompson & Ruth Negga are terrific!

    SUNDANCE 2021: film #11

“things aren’t always what they seem”

i was totally convinced that i loved this until it ended and i actually started weighing it properly. it begins so strong but as it becomes more introspective the narrative in turn got a bit lost. that’s not a bad thing, there are a lot of things worked into the script that work really well as separate pieces and conversations until they start to dissolve together (for better or for…

Passing marks a stunning directorial debut for Rebecca Hall. With a beautiful visual palate, strong thematic clarity, and brilliant performances from Thompson & Negga, it subverts expectations while adding to the conversation, serving as an important look into a forgotten era, yet leaves too many threads hanging for better or worse.

I bet this is a GREAT novella. A lot of themes and subtext that would work better on the page than in film. However I’m all for Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga being in everything. They’re both great. A good movie even if it falls just short of its potential.
