Someone should've explained to Tim Burton how musicals worked before he made them.
Sweeney Todd as originally conceptualized is a wonderfully gothic and grim musical (I highly recommend the original cast recording). While you can see why that seemed to appeal to Burton in theory he works so hard to sap every ounce of life out of this adaptation.

Upgrading this from my favorite of the year to the best. Each successive viewing I notice new details in the call-aheads, visuals, performances, and dialogue. It's densely packed with meaning in the exact way I adore, beyond how much its trappings and style are already my absolute shit. Even more than that three viewings in and I have yet to be bored by a single scene of this movie, the dark comedy and performances and writing are so damn functionally entertaining on top of everything else.
So I guess this just has some of the best hand-to-hand action choreography in a western film? On top of every other amazing thing. As much as I’ve enjoyed going through the series this one absolutely justified that choice. Fractured reality and space exploring corporations, technology, reality, video game structure... Completely spectacular. Also Mila definitely stepped on Paul in that outfit right?
