Desperately Seeking Susan

Desperately Seeking Susan ★★★★½

Susan Seidelman might be the most clothes-forward filmmaker I've ever seen. It's not just that her costumes always look great but that they serve as the dominant form of visual storytelling, you could watch her four studio comedies on mute and track every plot and character development by who's wearing what. They're especially crucial here for a movie about the clothes making the woman and vice versa, and they serve as the centerpiece of Seidelman's love letter to the outrageousness of 80s New York, a place she makes at once realer and more fantastical than any other filmic portrayal of it.
