Don't Look Up

Don't Look Up ★★★

“Can we just call it a potentially significant event?”

As much as I wholeheartedly support the messages of Adam McKay’s satirical disaster film Don’t Look Up, the director’s signature obnoxious style and lack of subtlety makes it difficult to connect with at times. The narrative is reasonably engaging and is energised by the frantic editing and largely decent comedy, but similarly to Vice and The Big Short, the condescending tone really starts to impede on the overall enjoyment; often making its scenarios and allegories seem more annoying than they are clever. It’s entertaining enough with some amusing moments despite its depressing implications, but once again McKay’s smug approach seems to really get in the way of his own ideas.
