John Carpenter’s Escape From New York is a neat and cynical action movie that works great thanks to Kurt Russell’s super cool anti-hero protagonist and the efficient use of its relatively simple but perfectly fitting concept of Manhattan becoming a giant prison. It’s very rough around the edges but it hits in the right places; made even better with its awesome soundtrack and production design, and although it maybe ranks a little lower than some of Carpenter’s other similar films, it’s still a heap of fun to watch.
