“Jesus, I approve of you as the only cool man besides Kurt Cobain.”
Even though I’m fairly liberal with giving five star ratings and expressing how much I love certain movies, I cannot understate what an overwhelmingly unbelievable force this movie is. Clocking in at four hours long, Sion Sono’s Love Exposure is one of the most effortlessly exciting, constantly engaging watches ever; and not even just relative to its length. I felt like I was going to burst with elation at any given point as it spews out unadulterated weirdness and increasingly bizarre, unexpected twists in the already elaborate, perverse plot - eliciting a spectrum of feelings as it deftly shifts between being super funny to thrilling to genuinely unsettling to emotionally stirring, sometimes all within the span of about 20 minutes. I’m definitely going to need to rewatch this as soon as I can afford to spare another four hours, but I can assuredly say this is a new high, high favourite of mine and is completely unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.
Side Thought: The soundtrack is also top tier, was not expecting to hear Yura Yura Teikoku in a movie any time soon but they’re such a great band and their inclusions in the film was so perfect.
