  • Another Round

    Another Round

Deliciously intoxicating and yet sharply sobering, Another Round manages to stick the landings of its frequent tonal shifts to capture the boisterous euphoria of drinking without neglecting the melancholy that rides alongside it. Vinterberg chooses wisely to seldom delve into subjectivity with the camerawork, allowing the audience to enjoy the chaos on screen whilst still recognizing the emotions of the characters throughout. This can be seen through the depiction of several emotional breakdowns, particularly for Martin, or simply through the…

  • First Reformed

    First Reformed

Quiet. I think this is perhaps the best word to describe Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed”. Not least because of the presentation. The music is infrequent and largely consists of diegetic choir performances, the camera is often still, allowing the events to wash over the audience through long takes, and Ethan Hawke’s performance is subdued, but incredibly nuanced. However, the film also touches on the theme of quietness quite consistently, alongside many other themes such as hopelessness and environmental issues. Reverend…

    Incredible But True

Starts off strongly, with an interesting concept and an intriguing non-linear structure. The funniest moments all come around the first 20 minutes as well, from the repetitive dialogue to the absurdity of a mechanical phallus. However, the film fails to build upon the strength of its opening, failing to engage in any interesting comedy on the themes it attempts to satirise. Furthermore, the interesting editing choices and presentation of the film’s fantastic opening sequence are abandoned for overly long montage sequences that allow the film to avoid a satisfying narrative conclusion.

Unfortunately, a big disappointment, especially given my love of Dupieux’s Deerskin.

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

This is the superhero movie of 2018. Not Infinity War, definitely not Black Panther, it's this. I had heard nothing but positive reviews of this film going in, and now I can understand why. It is so refreshing and exhilarating from start to finish. Everything from the story to the music to the aesthetic of this just fits wonderfully. Perhaps my only major gripe with the film is that the change in Miles' character happens a little too quickly to…

  • Midsommar

I learned 3 things whilst watching Midsommar:
    1. I simultaneously really do and really don't want to go to Sweden.
    2. This is the closest I'm getting to trying shrooms.
    3. Ari Aster is doing bits to be fair to him.
