A film like “Dolemite Is My Name” would never have made it into the cinemas. And that's why you can be happy that a streaming giant like Netflix is not afraid of such a niche project. The thing is funny, but it also has a huge heart.
"Dolemite Is My Name" is particularly impressive in the calm, thoughtful moments and describes a colorful era, a real charisma monster and a crazy, indeed definitely inspiring endeavor. Comes from nowhere and was a lot of fun. Rudy Ray Moore is more than entitled to this monument. It's a shame that he couldn't experience it himself. Whether as an extroverted rhymer and rap forerunner, as a pimpy stand-up comedian or just as a dreamer and independent filmmaker - you have to take your hat off to this unique brand.
Conclusion: the (streaming) surprise of the year - warm, wonderful, funny, personal, dramatic. Eddie Murphy's comeback is his new career high and one of the best originals you can find on the big red N.
