The King of Pigs: Heartbreakingly Real
“I hope you really find happiness”
Yeon Sang-ho’s animated drama film is the darkest animated film I have ever seen. I have not been this affected by an animated film since Grave of the Fireflies. The film portrays classism and bullying. All the characters we care about are among the downtrodden. They all handle their situation differently. However, the pain of their life follows them everywhere we go. I don’t think this film would work nearly as well without it being animated. It lacks subtlety and has dialogues that sound like they come from Joker. However, in an animated format this is hardly a problem for me. Through watching a few anime, I am used to this type of style now. If this is what Korean animation has to offer, I want to see more of it. A very modest budget, doesn’t hamper my enjoyment of the film because it is very powerful. Makes one feel grateful for the life they have.
