Because the fact that Weathering with You seems like a meta-response to, and almost a twisted, mirror version of Your Name., it's impossible to discuss this movie without comparing it directly to its predecessor. It might be a little bit unfair, but it's unavoidable.
I have to say that Weathering with You is very different from Your Name., in ways that will prevent it from ever becoming the same level of monstrous hit that movie was and is. It's weirder. Longer. Messier. Sillier. Sadder. It's got a whole lot of "movie sins" in the final act that will drive Plot Hole People insane. It's too subtle for Film Theory People to jump on it. The cast is bigger and the characters are more distinctly flawed, broken people. And, the kicker for most people, the songs aren't QUITE as memorable.
Despite all that, or maybe because of all that... I might like it more. Weathering with You is a truly special movie, and I hope you check it out.
