So earlier this year I saw The Killing of a Sacred Dear, and wasn't really a fan of it. Seeing a new Lanthimos film was coming soon, I was hesitant, but at the same time hoped that maybe I would convert.
I mean...
Okay hear me out, I loved the acting and the cinematography. I even accepted the fisheye lens and grew to kind of like it. Even the controversial ending I thought was fine.
My main problem with this is the pacing. As I said with my Sacred Dear review, it was just too damn slow, even for someone who loves a good slow burn movie. I just really couldn't get into it.
Same with this. While I liked some of the back and forth, the movie felt like it was 4 hours long. At one point after every scene I told myself "okay this seems like a good ending" and then a new scene began.
As I said earlier, I did really enjoy the acting by pretty much the whole cast. There really wasn't a dull moment acting-wise throughout and I felt for the three main leads whenever I wasn't groaning about the pace.
It may seem as if I really hate this movie, but I didn't. It was just two of the longest hours of my life. Lanthimos, you're a very interesting filmmaker. I really enjoy your style and your way of directing actors, but maybe you just aren't completely for me.
Man, I was really hoping and praying for this one.
