No other film of this decade had quite an ending like this. It's an understatement to say that it was totally draining, unflinching, and existential. In a way, I wish this was Marty's final film, his swansong. But at the same time, I know I should be sent to hell for what I just said. Scorsese is no doubt the greatest American filmmaker and the most consistent of all. I know he could create great works even on the way to his grave.
